Why is Key West called the Conch Republic?
In April 1982, the city of Key West declared itself to be the Conch Republic (pronounced “konk”). The move was a playful protest against a federal blockade inhibiting traffic into the Florida Keys. Although the “secession” lasted approximately one minute, today you can apply for an official Conch Republic passport . Just make sure your tongue is firmly planted in cheek.
